CHAPTER 19
Evan spends the next hour showing me around the Research facility (no, those aren’t torture devices), allowing me to play with his experiments (abruptly banning me from the massive thing that splits atoms), explaining things using words I don’t understand (electrophoresis?), and just generally showing me how ridiculously smart he is while remaining humble about it all. He and Libby were right about staying busy to keep my mind off the lockdown, but these distractions only help so much.
We bypassed floors eight and nine. Part of me is fine with that because I’m not sure I want to meet new people right now, but the other part of me wonders if Evan is embarrassed of me. Or worse—scared to introduce me to his other colleagues because I might be evil. It takes a lot of effort for me to shove those worries aside. Evan has taken me in for now, and that’s all that matters.
I spread my arms open, relaxing on a beanbag as it hovers three feet off the floor in Evan’s living room. I toss my head back. “I could get used to this.”
He’s controlling the hover device with a remote he made with spare parts from other remotes. The idea, something he affectionately calls the Cloud Bag, is from the collection of inventions he created for kids. We brought the Cloud Bag back from the sixth floor, where he’s dedicated the entire level to inventions that he hopes to market as a toy store for Super kids.
He moves the joystick repurposed from a video game controller and the beanbag swooshes to the right, taking me with it. “It is nice having someone else here to be my guinea pig.” The mechanical pencil between his teeth muffles his words as he holds out a device that shoots a laser from the floor to the bottom of my hovercraft, displaying the distance on a tiny LED screen.
I hold on as he swings the beanbag to the left, stopping just before sending me headfirst into the wall. He takes the measurement again with the laser beam and records it on his tablet. “It’s nice testing my inventions with someone who isn’t obsessed with their own projects like the people I work with.”
“I never thought I’d say this because, you know, Research is for total nerds”—I point at him—“but this place is cool. I could see myself working here if the Hero thing doesn’t work out. It would be more fun than being a Retriever.”
“You’ve worked hard to be a Hero. You shouldn’t give up that soon.” His lips curl into a sly grin. “Besides, who would hire you? Certainly not the employee you just called a nerd.”
I cross my arms. “I’d think that employee would be honored to hire me.”
“Good thing you aren’t paid to think.”
I stand up and throw the beanbag chair in his face—a friendly, non-evil gesture that makes him grab my hand and twist it around my back, pinning me to his chest. “Ev-an,” I groan, gasping for breath through the ridiculous smile plastered on my face.
